ETIAS stands for (European Travel Information and Authorization System)  First formed in 1989, it is expected to launch in mid-2025, meaning travelers do not need to apply for it at this time. I will keep you informed when I learn of it's enforcement.  However, thought you should learn about it before last minute.

It is a pre travel authorization system for visitors to the Schengen Area.  The Schengen area is a group of 29 countries and growing.  The Schengen area allows people to travel freely between member countries without going through border controls.

In the context of law enforcement cooperation, the Schengen area allows for:

  • improved systems of communication between police forces
  • hot pursuit of criminals
  • cross-border surveillance of suspects
  • mutual operational assistance
  • direct exchanges of information between police authorities

This is an enormous advantage in the fight against terrorism and against serious and organised crime, including trafficking in human beings and illegal migration.

The Schengen area allows travelers to move freely between these countries without needing to go through border checks or get separate visas

There are currently  29 European countries that are part of the Schengen areaThese countries are:
    • Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia,
    • Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta,
    • The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland

All American Citizens traveling to the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days) for tourism, business, transit, or medical reasons need to apply.   It is valid for 3 years or until  the expiration of the passport it is linked to, whichever comes first.

Online Application:

The ETIAS application process involves completing an online form with personal details, passport information, travel history, and answering security questions, which is then electronically processed within a short timeframe, usually within 96 hours, to determine if you are authorized to travel visa-free to the Schengen Area countries.

Go to ETIAS.com for more information and the applications that needs to be filled out.

Countries that will require ETIAS are those currently in the Schengen Area.
